A Decade Of Non-Resilence, Passion, and Consistency: The Journey Of Ijaw Women Connect (IWC).

As we celebrate the 10th anniversary of Ijaw Women Connect (IWC), we look back on a remarkable journey marked by passion, dedication, and a shared vision to uplift and empower Ijaw women across Nigeria and beyond. This milestone is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a testament to the resilience, unity, and strength of every woman who has been a part of this incredible journey. Together, we have built a movement that stands for the dignity, growth, and recognition of Ijaw women everywhere.

THE FOUNDING VISION: Where It All Began.

Ten years ago, IWC was born out of a burning desire and the realisation that Ijaw women needed a platform where their voices could be heard, their potentials explored, and their contributions to society recognized. The vision was clear: to create a community that would support, educate, and advocate for the rights of Ijaw women, especially during a time when women’s roles were often overlooked and undervalued in the broader socio-political landscape.

The formation of IWC was a response to the underrepresentation of Ijaw women in key decision-making processes within Ijaw Nation. Observing this gap, it became evident that women were often relegated due to  lack of exposure, knowledge, and the cultural barriers that historically kept them from participating actively in the affairs of our nation.

Driven by the desire to change this narrative, I was inspired by my involvement in the Ijaw National Congress (INC), following the then National Organising Secretary, Engr. Ebieridei Charles Ambaiowei, MNSE, who later became the acting president. During my participation in INC meetings as far back as 2011, I noticed that women were not fully included; they were sidelined even when they had much to offer. Coming from a military background where women played significant roles, even in peacekeeping missions, this exclusion was a stark contrast to the potential I knew Ijaw women had.

I believe that if Ijaw women are united under one umbrella organisation, we could amplify our voices and play a pivotal role in the struggle for self-determination. Thus, IWC was established not just as a support group but as a movement to rediscover, empower, and elevate Ijaw women to their rightful place in society.

MILESTONES AND ACHIEVEMENTS: A LEGACY OF IMPACT.

Over the past decade, IWC has turned this vision into a reality, achieving milestones that have left a lasting impact on the lives of countless women. From organising workshops that opened up new career opportunities to launching community development projects that brought tangible benefits to local communities, each initiative has moved us closer to our shared goals.

One of our first major initiatives was the town hall sensitization programs, where we travelled to various communities in the creeks to educate women about the IWC movement and its purpose. Our dedication to advocacy was evident when we intervened during a crisis in Eastern Obolo, an Ijaw Community in Akwa Ibom, where several chiefs were killed. We reached out to the then government of His Excellency President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan GCFR. GCON, through a letter, channelling our plea via the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Power, Amb. Dr. Godknows Boladei Igali OON, which led to a positive response and some resolutions.

Our impact is best reflected in the stories of the women whose lives have been transformed. One such story is of a young woman who aspired to become a nurse. I sponsored her education in nursing school, and today, she proudly works as a nurse, having realised her dream. These stories of hope and transformation are what drive me to continue on this path.

GROWTH AND EXPANSION : Reaching New Heights

What started as an online platform with a small group of passionate women has grown into a powerful network that reaches across Nigeria and beyond. Today, IWC stands strong as a global community, connecting Ijaw women from all walks of life, providing support, mentorship, and opportunities for personal and professional growth.

Our expansion has not only increased our membership but also our influence. We are now forging partnerships with organisations and reaching out to our sisters in the diaspora, ensuring that Ijaw Women Connect remains a truly global movement—hence why we often proudly say, “Ijaw Women Worldwide.”

OVERCOMING CHALLENGES: The Spirit of Resilience

Like any great movement, the journey of IWC has not been without its challenges. From issues of funding and resource limitations to the misconception that our organisation was merely a stepping stone for political ambitions, we have faced numerous obstacles that tested our resolve. Some even joined initially with the wrong motives, seeing IWC as a political tool rather than a force for true emancipation.

But it was in these difficult times that our spirit of resilience and determination shone brightest. We remained steadfast in our commitment to the cause, driven by the unwavering belief in the strength and potential of Ijaw women.

STORIES OF CHANGE: Transforming Lives

Our impact goes beyond numbers; it’s about the real lives we’ve touched. Over the years, IWC has given scholarships, provided skills training, and fostered a sense of self-worth and confidence in women who once doubted their abilities. We have watched young girls grow into leaders, mothers become entrepreneurs, and communities thrive because of the power of IWC.

One such story that stands out is of a young girl whose mother shared her dreams of becoming a nurse with me. I believed in her dream and supported her education, and today, she has not only graduated but is giving back to her community with pride and purpose. Another remarkable success was securing an amnesty scholarship for a young man who has now graduated and is contributing positively to society.

A VISION FOR THE NEXT DECADE:

As we look to the future, IWC is more determined than ever to deepen our impact and broaden our reach. We aim to launch new initiatives focused on healthcare, education, and economic sustainability. Our upcoming community health outreach program will provide the much-needed medical checkups and aid to some underserved areas, reinforcing our commitment to holistic support.

We are also pushing to establish greater collaboration with government bodies, NGO’S and international partners to amplify our efforts and ensure that Ijaw women are represented at all levels of decision-making. Our journey is far from over, and we are excited about the new heights we will reach together.

This journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our members, partners, and al, especiallyally Comrade Mrs. Eugenia Opamini Obongha, who i first shared this lofty idea with and also Hon.
